Professor Gaya Prasad

Professor Gaya Prasad was born on November 5, 1953 in Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh. Prof. Prasad obtained bachelor of veterinary science and animal husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) degree in 1977; Masters (M.V.Sc.) in veterinary bacteriology in 1979 & Ph.D. in veterinary microbiology and public health in 1984 from G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pant Nagar, Uttarakhand. He worked as Post Doctoral Fellow at M.D. Anderson Hospital and Cancer Institute, University of Texas, Cancer Centre, Science Park Research Division, Smithville, Texas, USA from 1986 to1988

Prof. Prasad has held several important positions including vice chancellor of Sardar Vallabhhhai Patel University of Agriculture & Technology, Modipuram, Meerut; National Consultant in Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of United Nations; Director, ICAR Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar, Bareilly; Assistant Director General (Animal Health), Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi; Founder Head, Department of Animal Biotechnology, College of Veterinary Science, CCS HAU (now Lalalajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences), Hisar; Coordinator, Human Resource Development Program funded by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India at College of Veterinary Sciences, then constituent college of CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar.

Prof. Prasad has a very long and diverse experience of working at state, national and international institutions and organizations. His academic career spans over 45 years.

Besides teaching, he has made significant contribution in the field of Veterinary Virology in India, particularly on animal reoviruses including bluetongue virus molecular epidemiology, diagnostics and genomic diversity of different serotypes circulating in India. His other contributions include molecular epidemiology of animal group A rotaviruses, animal model for AIDS research using temperature sensitive (ts1) mutant of Moloney murine leukemia virus-TB and BALB/c mice. He made significant contribution in development and commercialization of a pentavalent vaccine against bluetongue virus. He has been principal investigator of several research projects funded by national and international funding agencies. Dr. Prasad has extensively traveled in several countries including USA, Canada, Mexico, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Turkey, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Kenya, China, Russia, etc

Prof. Prasad has been in several national committees and office bearer of national societies including president of Association of Microbiologist of India; Editor of Indian Journal of Microbiology and Managing Editor of Indian Journal of Virology to name a few. He is recipient of several prestigious awards including Rafi Ahmad Kindwai Award of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi; Dr. P. Bhattacharya Memorial Award of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi; Prof. Vyas Memorial Award of Association of Microbiologist of India; Life Time Achievement Award of Indian Virological Society; Dr. Richard Masillamony Oration Award of Indian Society for Veterinary Immunology and Biotechnology, Chennai; Dr, C.V. Canan Memorial Award of Indian Association of Veterinary Anatomists; J.B. Bhatt Memorial Award (twice in 2005 & 2006) of Association of Microbiologists of India; Rajesh Pilot Award (2016) of High-Tech Horticulture Society; Life Time Achievement Award (2017), Science & Technology Society; Life Time Achievement Award (2019) of Pragati International Scientific Research Foundation, Meerut, India; Kameswar Sahai Bhargava Award (2020) of Indian Virological Society.

Dr. Prasad holds two Indian patents (1. Patent No. 261631 & 2. Patent No. 261685). Prof. Prasad is Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences; National Academy of Veterinary Sciences; Association of Microbiologists of India; Indian Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Research & Indian Virological Society. He has more than 200 publications including research papers, book chapters, review articles, popular science articles, books, national reports, on different aspects of veterinary microbiology to his credit.
